Richard Stead

1888/9 to 26th/ 28th October 1914  (aged 26/7)

Richard Stead was the second son of George Stead and Mary Stead. They lived at the Old Post Office, Kyre and George was a postman. He had an older brother and a younger brother and Sister. He was born in Kyre, Tenbury about 1888. In 1911 he was in the military.
He was a Lance Corporal in the Royal Welsh Fusilliers 2nd Batallion.  His service number was 9529 and he was killed 26th(or28th) October 1914     in Flanders. He is buried in Pont-Du-Hem Military Cemetry, La Gorgue.


John Taylor
1888/9 to 6th/ 8th May 1915  (aged 26/7)

John Taylor was the elder son of William Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor. He had a younger brother. They lived at The Grove, Little Kyre, William was an Agricultural Labourer and he died in 1900 aged 44. His mother remarried to William Postans and they lived in Poke House, Kyre Parva in 1911. John also had a half brother.

In 1911 John was a private in the Royal Marines and was based in Gosport, Hampshire. He became a Corporal in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, Service Number PO/13719. He was killed 6th(or8th) May 1915 at Gallipolli and he is commemorated at Halles Memorial

 

George Stead
1893 to 9th August 1915  (aged 23)

George Stead was the youngest son of George Stead and Mary Stead. They lived at the Old Post Office, Kyre and George was a postman. He had two older brothers and a Sister. He was born in Kyre around 1893 and in 1911 he worked as a gardener.
He was a private in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) 9th Batallion, service number 13359, having enlisted in Derby. He was killed 9th August 1915 at Gallipolli and is commemorated at Halles Memorial.

 

John Childe-Freeman
17th August 1890 to 25th September 1915  (aged 25)

John Arthur Childe-Freeman was the only son of Arthur John Childe-Freeman and Harriet Childe-Freeman (nee Shaw). He had an older sister Mary  (who married Sir Clement Harman- Lord Mayor of London) and a twin sister. His father died in 1853 in Bromyard and his mother died in 1907. In 1901 John was a pupil in Folkestone, Kent and by 1911 he was in the military.

He became a Captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (2nd Batallion)  number 15375 and was awarded the Military Cross. He was killed 25th September 1915 at Loos and he is buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension.


Francis James Dorrell
3rd October 1895 to 9th March 1918 ( aged 22)


Francis James Dorrell was the 5th child of Henry Dorrell and Margaret Drusilla Dorrell (nee Keysell) who farmed at the Fulhams. He had 2 older and 1 younger brother and 2 older and 1 younger sisters. He was working as a drapers assistant in Hereford in 1911.

He joined the Herefords and became a sergeant with the machine gun corps and was awarded the Military Medal. He saw action at Gallipoli and was killed in Palestine on 9th March 1918 and is buried in the Jerusalem War Cemetery.

Frank Albert Willis Still
2nd July 1894 to 27th July 1918 ( aged 24)

Frank Albert Wallis Still was the youngest son of Thomas Still and Josephine Still. Thomas Still became vicar at Kyre and they earlier lived in The Parsonage, Market Drayton. He had 3 older brothers. It appears that in 1911 he went to Oregon via New York and in 1914 he married Florence Agnes Best (who was born in Brampton, Cumberland) in Minnesota, USA. They arrived in Ontario, Canada in 1916. They had a daughter, Josephine, born in 1918.

He served with the 8th Batallion of the Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) as a sergeant  and was killed in France on 27th July 1918 and buried in Duisans British Cemetry, Etrun, France.

Henry Ernest Dorrell
8th September 1888 to 19th September 1918 ( aged 30)

Henry Ernest Dorrell was the eldest child of Henry Dorrell and Margaret Drusilla Dorrell (nee Keysell) who farmed at the Fulhams. He had 3 younger brothers and 3 younger sisters. He was working on the farm at the Fulhams in 1911.
He joined the Shropshire Yeomanry in Oswestry and became a Lance Corporal ,regimental number 230256. He fought in Egypt and Palestine. He was killed on 19th September 2014 in France and he is commemorated at Vis-En-Artois Memorial
